Welcome to the 1st CASTLE newsletter
Audio describers and subtitlers will be brought together with theatres and other cultural institutions, to provide more accessibility services for audience members with hearing or visual impairments.
CASTLE will enhance the status and professional role of audio describers and subtitlers, so they can open up new business ideas and opportunities. Participants will access training workshops to boost their enterprise skills and learn how to promote an audio description or subtitling business to theatres, museums and other cultural organisations.
CASTLE will produce a practical start-up handbook for entrepreneurs in cultural accessibility (focusing on audio description and subtitling). This will be a unique transnational product, containing all steps required to launch a new business.
CASTLE's interactive web platform will support participants to identify winning business models and get in touch with potential customers.
Project Meeting 1 - United Kingdom
The University of Wolverhampton is the CASTLE project coordinator, and so hosted the first transnational project meeting on 14 and 15 November 2017.
Two representatives came from each partner organisation, to share information about themselves and meet the rest of the partners.
UoW had already worked successfully with three partner organisations - Argo, Centro Diego Fabbri (Italy) and Audiosigno (Spain), on the Theatres for All project, which managed training for audio describers.
Partners discussed the two intellectual outputs to be produced - a business start-up handbook and an online platform. They also made plans for the first workshop.
Workshop 1 - Slovenia
From 9-13th April 2018, project partner SAŠA Inkubator hosted a workshop in Velenje, Slovenia.
25 participants from the 5 partner countries took part: either audio describers, subtitlers or doing accessibility work.
Workshop sessions included:
- How to choose the business model that works for you?
- What are business opportunities for audio describers?
- How to create the story that sells?
Participants said: “it has been really valuable and I had an opportunity to meet new people who work in access” and "it has been incredible to be part of something, where you can bring so many people together and talk about accessibility”.
Project Meeting 2 - Slovenia
During the second half of Workshop 1, the CASTLE project partners also travelled to Velenje for a transnational project meeting.
The project is now 25% completed, and work has begun on the first of our two intellectual outputs: a business start-up handbook which will be freely available for audio describers and subtitlers.
Partners discussed the content to be created for the workbook, and the timeline so that we can complete the final version by November 2018.
SAŠA Inkubator also organised a press conference, which was well attended by national media representatives. That evening, the project was even featured on a Slovenian national TV news programme.
